[Pho.Talk] How to get to Instagram Pier in Hong Kong with Map

If you are into Instagram, you surely know about the Instagram Pier in Hong Kong.

It is famous for being where stunning sunset shots were taken, and on better days, reflections of them.

In this how-to guide, I will outline for you step by step how to get to the Instagram Pier as a local Hong Kong-er.

The easiest way to get there is via MTR, exiting at HKU station, plus 10-15 minutes of walk. You can also get there via trams. To get to the eastern entrance, get off the tram at Hill Road Station; for the western entrance, get off at the station closest to the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool.

You are probably very excited about shooting there, and here are some pictures to get your more excited.

Indeed a massive throwback to when Instagram only allowed square posts. I have grown so much as a photographer shooting at the pier and thats why I am writing this guide so that you can find it easily.

HKU MTR Exit B2/ C2

Taking the MTR is the easiest way to get to the Instagram Pier - it is a 10-15 minute walk depending on where you enter the pier from.

The closest MTR station to the pier is the HKU station. The entire pier area has two main parts - the main pier, and the unloading shelter.

Main Pier Area/ Western District Public Cargo Working Area - B2

The main Pier area is where the type of Instagram pictures like the above are taken.

It is the protruding land that extends into the harbour, the elongated rectangular parti, extending from the Western District Promenade.

See the red pin in the map below.

To get there, B2 exit is the closest. An extra 15 minute walk will get you to the Promenade, the eastern entrance to the Instagram Pier.

In simple words, exit at B2 will get you to Hill Road. To you left you see a 7-Eleven store, and cross to that side of Hill Road. Walk along Hill Road until you reached the junction at Des Voeux Road West.

You know you got to Des Voeux Road West when you see trams passing by in front of you. It is a wide, main road.

Just cross to the other side of Des Voeux Road and continue walking in the same direction. You will reach Shing Sai Road.

Continue heading forwards, and you will be walking along white concrete walls with a blue stripe of paint on it.

Walk some more until you see a tiny door on your left.

Bonus: Unloading Shelter Area - Exit C2

For sunsets, head over to the main pier for the best angles.

But there is a relatively quiet area that is worth checking out.

The pier is in fact a U-shaped area in which the main pier represents only one prong.

Head over to the other side to see more images like these.

This is where you find stacks of bamboos, cargos and miscellaneous tools stacked together, forming interesting patterns and backgrounds.

Usually, ships are parked there and workers (off)load goods with the aid of these tools.

It is also a common place to fly drones, because the Pier is one of the rare areas in Hong Kong that isn’t surrounded by densely packed building structures.

From exit C2, walk along Collinson Street until you reach Praya, Kennedy Town. This too is a main road with trams passing by.

Turn left and continue walking, until you reached Sai Cheung Street North. On the opposite side of the Praya, to your right, there is the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool.

Cross the Praya and continue walking along Sai Cheung Street. You will see a gate wide open, leading into the promenade area.

This is the western entrance into the Pier.

By Tram

Getting to the Instagram Pier by tram is also a good option if you have a bit more time to spare. It really gives you a great look around Hong Kong Island.

Main Pier Area - Hill Road Stop

If you are on a westbound tram, get off at stop 92W (Hill Road Stop). Walk towards the closest zebra crossing, and cross to the side where you see more green trees.

If you are on an eastbound tram, get off at stop 07E (Hill Road Stop).

Keep crossing a few more zebra crossings until you reach Shing Sai Road.

Continue heading forwards, and you will be walking along white concrete walls with a blue stripe of paint on it.

Walk some more until you see a tiny door on your left.

Unloading Shelter Area

If you are on a westbound tram, get off at 98W (Kennedy Town Praya). Walk towards the direction of the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, and cross over to the side of the Belcher Bay Park.

If you are on an eastbound tram, get off at 03E Holland Street. Walk along the Belcher Bay Park, and turn left at Sai Cheung Street North.

Continue walking along Sai Cheung Street North until you see a wide opened gate. That is the western entrance into the Instagram Pier.
